People Make Parks

Conveniently scheduled to take place on PARK(ing) Day 2011, today also marks the launch of a new initiative, called People Make Parks, and its corresponding website, www.peoplemakeparks.org. Focused on New York, the website will “provide tools and resources the community needs to develop a vision for their local parks and ensure that this vision is considered as the parks are renovated and improved.”

People Make Parks represents a partnership between nonprofits Hester Street Collaborative, profiled here previously, and Partnerships for Parks. Together, their premise is “When citizens weigh in on park design, government builds better parks, and the public continues to care for places that they have helped to make.”

The official launch of People Make Parks will take place as part of the ongoing BMW Guggenheim Lab festivities this evening in New York, details of which are available here.
