2010 NEA report on Creative Placemaking

Last Friday evening, we had the pleasure of hearing Jason Schupbach, Design Director at the National Endowment for the Arts, speaking during a Creative Santa Fe event. Schupbach’s talk focused on “creative economies” as well as what the NEA has dubbed “creative placemaking.” Both elements of his talk were aided by a 2010 NEA research report, titled Creative Placemaking, co-authored by Ann Markusen and Anne Gadwa.

In creative placemaking, partners from the public, private, nonprofit, and community sectors strategically shape the physical and social character of a neighborhood, town, city, or region around arts and cultural activities. Creative placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety, and brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired.
